Secure Your Luggage

Become a savvy traveller and learn how to secure your luggage for the big trip, so that everything arrives when you do.

In a time of heightened security, it is highly recommended that all checked luggage is locked and identifiable.

While the use of key or combination locks may still be suitable for interstate travel, there are safer options on the market for international travel. Zip ties tagged with individual serial numbers are a great option to secure your luggage, as they cannot be resealed once cut.

When travelling to the United States, if you are wanting to secure your checked luggage, you can only use TSA approved locks. TSA has worked with several companies to develop locks that can be opened by security officers using universal “master” keys so that the locks may not have to be cut. The packaging and logo on the locks indicates whether they can be opened by TSA without damaging the luggage or traditional padlock.

Before travelling, ensure you do your research into what security products will be best for you. At Zelows, we carry a full range of travel security products and accessories, available online and instore.

Other tips for travellers:
  • Use a luggage strap to help identify your luggage and to keep it closed in case of broken zips or handles.
  • Place luggage tags on all items, and specify name, address and telephone number on the tags.
  • Take care carrying valuable documents, cash, travellers’ cheques and credit cards. Carry your wallet in your front pocket, and if carrying a bag, hold it tightly with the straps close to your body.
  • On long-haul flights, it is recommended that any valuables and travel documents such as your passport, money and credit cards be kept on your person and not in the overhead storage compartment.
